- History of The Former Capital of India, " Fatehpur Sikri "
Fathehpur Sikri is a city and a municipal board in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Built near the much older Sikri, the historical city of Fatehabad, as it was first named, was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar beginning in 1570, in honour of Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti, who lived in a cavern on the ridge at Sikri, and foretold the birth of his son, who was named Prince Salim after him, and later succeeded Akbar to the throne of the Mughal Empire, as Jahangir. Fatehabad later acquired the name Fatehpur, and gave rise to present name Fatehpur Sikri. It was the first planned city of the Mughals and also first one in Mughal architecture, an amalgamation of Indian architecture, Persian andIslamic architecture, and served as the Mughal Empire's capital from 1571 until 1585. Though the court took 15 years to build, it was abandoned after only 14 years because the water supply was unable to sustain the growing population. and unrest in the North-West.Today, the complex of buildings, including the extant royal palaces, courts and the Jama Masjid is a popular tourist attraction, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.The site itself is a ghost town, though the city has a population of 28804 as per 2001 census.
- Beautiful Palaces in Fatehpur Sikri -
The buildings of Fatehpur Sikri show a synthesis of various regional schools of architectural craftsmanship such as Gujarat and Bengal.
This was because indigenous craftsmen from various regions were used for the construction of the buildings.
Influences from Hindu and Jain architecture are seen hand in hand with Islamic elements.

Some of the important buildings in this city, both religious and secular are:
#. Anup Talao: A tank with a central platform and four bridges leading up to it.
#. Buland Darwaza: One of the gateways to the Jama Masjid, a stup endous piece of architecture from the outside, gradually making a transition to a human scale in the inside.
#. Diwan-i-Am : A building typology found in many cities where the ruler meets the general public. In this case, it is a pavilion-like multi-bayed rectangular structure fronting a large open space.
#. Diwan-i-Khas: Famous for its central pillar with thirty-six volutes supporting a circular platform for Akbar. It is here that Akbar had representatives of different religions discuss their faiths.
#.Hujra-i-Anup Talao: Said to be the residence of Akbar's Muslim wife, although this is disputed due to its small size.
#.Jama Masjid: The mosque, built in the manner of Indian mosques, with liwans around a central courtyard. A distinguishing feature is the row of chhatri over the sanctuary.
#.Mariam-uz-Zamani's Palace: The building of Akbar's wife shows Gujarati influence and is built around a courtyard, with special care being taken to ensure privacy.
#.Naubat Khana: Near the entry, where important arrivals are announced.
#.Pachisi Court: A square marked out as a large board game, the precursor to modern day Ludo game where people served as the playing pieces.

Jodha Bai's palace is the largest and most important part of Imperial Harem, having all facilities, provisions and safeguards.
The name Jodha Bai palace is a misnomer in itself. It is most widely accepted that the building was for Raniwas or Zenani-Dyodhi.
The palace building consists of a rectangular block measuring 231'8"x215' in dimension, with a single magnificent gateway on eastern side, which was protected by guard rooms, having triangular ceiling and other apartments.
Several Hindu motifs have been used in the building, which confirms that occupant of the building was a Hindu lady.

Sikri an extension of the upper Vindhyan ranges is situated on the bank of a large natural lake, which has now mostly dried up.
It is a pre-historic site and, with abundant water, forest and raw material, it was ideal for primitive man’s habitation.
Rock shelters with paintings exist on the periphery of the lake. Stone age tools have been found in this area.

An inscription found on the stone sculpture of Jaina Saraswati (dated 1067 Vikram Samvat = 1010 A.D.) mentions this place as ‘Sekrikya’, which seems to be a similar derivative.
All this shows that Sikri was continuously inhabited since the prehistoric period.
